1 John 5

Overcoming the World

1 aEveryone who believes that Jesus is the
I.e., Messiah
Christ has been cborn of God, and everyone who loves the
Lit one who has fathered
Father eloves the child born of Him.
2 fBy this we know that gwe love the children of God, when we love God and
Lit do
follow His commandments.
3For ithis is the love of God, that we jkeep His commandments; and kHis commandments are not burdensome. 4For
Lit everything that
whoever has been mborn of God novercomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

5 Who is the one who overcomes the world, but the one who obelieves that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is the One who came pby water and blood, Jesus Christ; not
Lit in
with the water only, but
Lit in
with the water and
Lit in
with the blood. It is tthe Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
7For there are uthree that testify: 8
A few late mss add ...in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. And there are three that testify on earth, the Spirit
the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are
Lit for the one thing
in agreement.
9 xIf we receive the testimony of people, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that yHe has testified concerning His Son. 10The one who believes in the Son of God zhas the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has aamade Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. 11And the testimony is this, that God has given us abeternal life, and acthis life is in His Son. 12 adThe one who has the Son has the life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.

This Is Written That You May Know

13 aeThese things I have written to you who afbelieve in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have ageternal life. 14This is ahthe confidence which we have
Lit toward
before Him, that, ajif we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
15And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, akwe know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother or sister
Lit sinning
committing a sin not leading to death, amhe shall ask and
Or God will give him life, that is, to those who...
God will, for him, give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. aoThere is sin leading to death; apI am not saying that he should ask about that.
17 aqAll unrighteousness is sin, and arthere is sin not leading to death.

18 asWe know that atno one who has been born of God
Or sins continually
sins; but He who was born of God avkeeps him, and awthe evil one does not axtouch him.
19 ayWe know that azwe are of God, and that bathe whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20And bbwe know that bcthe Son of God has come, and has bdgiven us understanding so that we may know beHim who is true; and we bfare in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. bgThis is the true God and bheternal life.

21 biLittle children, guard yourselves from bjidols.
